THE DARKLING THRUSH
by: Thomas Hardy (1840-1928)

LEANT upon a coppice gate
When Frost was spectre-gray,
And Winter's dregs made desolate
The weakening eye of day.

The tangled bine-stems scored the sky
Like strings of broken lyres,
And all mankind that haunted nigh
Had sought their household fires.

The land's sharp features seem'd to be
The Century's corpse outleant,
His crypt the cloudy canopy,
The wind his death-lament.
The ancient pulse of germ and birth
Was shrunken hard and dry,
And every spirit upon earth
Seem'd fervourless as I.

At once a voice arose among
The bleak twigs overhead
In a full-hearted evensong
Of joy illimited;
An aged thrush, frail, gaunt, and small,
In blast-beruffled plume,
Had chosen thus to fling his soul
Upon the growing gloom.

So little cause for carollings
Of such ecstatic sound
Was written on terrestrial things
Afar or nigh around,
That I could think there trembled through
His happy good-night air
Some blessèd Hope, whereof he knew
And I was unaware.
.
.

Good week thus far I hope!

Love

I Love...

... this movie.
I by chance stumbled across one of the songs featured in the movie on Youtube this morning and have subsequently spent all day listening to the brilliant soundtrack, listing as follows:
1. A Story Of Boy Meets Girl - 500 Days Of Summer
2. Us (Remastered) - Regina Spektor
3. There Is A Light That Never Goes Out - The Smiths*
4. Bad Kids - The Black Lip
5. Please, Please, Please, Let Me Get What I Want - The Smiths
6. There Goes The Fear - Doves
7. You Make My Dreams - Hall & Oates
8. Sweet Disposition - The Temper Trap
9. Quelqu’un M’a Dit - Carla Bruni
10. Mushaboom - Feist
11. Hero - Regina Spektor
12. Bookends - Simon And Garfunkel
13. Vagabond - Wolfmother
14. She’s Got You High - Mumm-ra
15. Here Comes Your Man - Meaghan Smith
16. Please, Please, Please, Let Me Get What I Want - She & Him
(500) Days of Summer is super duper and I love it and if you havn't seen it I Command you to watch it (cue evil laugh) for the following reasons:
  1. Zooey Deschanel is ridiculously pretty,
  2. and her clothes are fab (total Girl Crush),
  3. Joseph-Gordon Levitt is a dish,
  4. the music is awesome,
  5. and the storyline excellent,
  6. j'adore!
  7. Because what I say goes (just kidding obv!)**
So yeah, pretty ace all round.
Well, have a good weekend everyone, I'm going to sleep tomorrow and see New Moon on Sunday and see you Monday!

* Cue bad impression of Smiths from me "if a double decker buuus crashes into us...to die by your side is such a heavenly way to dieeee"
** As you can see, I quite like lists.

November!

November!
by Thomas Hood
No sun--no moon!
No morn--no noon!
No dawn--no dusk--no proper time of day--
No sky--no earthly view--
No distance looking blue--
No road--no street--no "t'other side this way"--
No end to any Row--
No indications where the Crescents go--
No top to any steeple--
No recognitions of familiar people--
No courtesies for showing 'em--
No knowing 'em!
No traveling at all--no locomotion--
No inkling of the way--no notion--
"No go" by land or ocean--
No mail--no post--
No news from any foreign coast--
No Park, no Ring, no afternoon gentility--
No company--no nobility--
No warmth, no cheerfulness, no healthful ease,
No comfortable feel in any member--
No shade, no shine, no butterflies, no bees,
No fruits, no flowers, no leaves, no birds--
November!
Hope you enjoy!

Wednesday, 18 November 2009

Another Wednesday marks the middle of another week. I was supposed to be at this job for one month (beginning of September until the end) but I have now been here for 11 weeks. However, the end of the project is in sight and I am now once again staring down the black hole of unemployment.

I got the offer of an interview next week.
Part of me thinks I should feel happy to be offered anything in the current economic climate, but the other part of me, my gut instinct if you will, says this isn't really what I'm looking for and that I should hold out for something better.

Also that the first interview is in a Holiday Inn rather than their offices does seem a leeeetle weird, right? Like I should be delivering a brown paper package or drinking champagne (maybe only fizzy white wine at a Holiday Inn come to think of it) with a wealthy businessman!

Just feels wrong to turn down an interview is all.
I'm sure you will be hearing a lot more about how things progress on here in the coming weeks.

And now onto something completely different
this picture totally captured my heart. So sweet and clever I love it.

Have a good afternoon and evening dear readers.

Back tomorrow with Poetry Thursday.
